Has your crappie fishing lacked a good consistent catch? Are you a beginner crappie angler and confused on where to start? Well you are not alone. Many crappie fisherman struggle to get a consistent catch. Fishing for crappie is like any other sport you need to practice and you need to follow a set of guidelines and rules. I would like to give you some simple crappie catching tips, that can improve your crappie catch.

#1 Guideline - When you get out on the water do not just start catching crappie. Chances are what ever you are doing to catch fish will work at other locations too. It is very important that you map out a set pattern that you fish for the day at all the different fishing locations you go to throughout the day. To determine what pattern will work best you need to identify details like: Did you get your crappie hits when your crappie bait was floating downward? At what depth did the crappie strikes occur? Were the hits on the windward side of the structure you were fishing? These are just a few of the details you need to document and take a metal note of. As you get more experienced this list will grow.

#2 Guideline - It is very important to be very quiet when you are targeting any species of fish and that includes the sport of crappie fishing. I can guarantee that any slab crappie will scatter if you make any noises such as moving around in the boat, dropping things to the bottom of the boat talking loudly ext. The older the fish gets the more smart and cunning they become. Large crappies will move when when the sense any different from their natural habitat. Sound carries in water just as it does in the air. This is one of the easiest crappie fishing rules to adhere too. But you would be surprised how many rookie fisherman overlook this simple tip.

#3 Guideline - How many times have you been out crappie fishing and you get hungry and reach down and pull out a handful of chips or eat a sandwich, then you go right back to handling your crappie baits? Well crappie can smell the things that you just ate and the different smell may be just enough to cause them not to bite or move off. Next time you eat out on the water wipe your hands clean then rub them with some commercial crappie scent. You will be surprised how much this tip may increase your crappie catch.

Crappie Fishing Tips - Part 2 - A Must Need List For Gear and Baits For Crappie!
By Mark Fleagle

Crappie schools originated in Eastern United States and up and into Canada. Thanks to stocking, they can be found throughout the United States. They spread quickly to rivers, streams and lakes and if left unchecked can over populate quite quickly and crowd out other species.

There is no need to worry about in your area of the US or Canada getting over populated soon because this species of fish is one of the most sought after game fish. You can catch them at several different time of the day, In all seasons and weather. Crappie fisherman have been said to be the thread that ties all anglers of America together. Maybe thats why there is so much information about crappie fishing available.

Well enough with the background on this species of fish so lets get to the teeth of this article and that is to give you some valuable fishing tips about proper gear, and baits. The key to catching crappie is know how. I have developed a list of fishing tips that I think will be very helpful when you plan your next fishing trip.

#1: Crappie Gear Without the right fishing gear you will have a rough time catching anything. You need to have a good long rod with a sensitive tip, a graphite pole over 8ft long is better, but an old bamboo pole will work also. You will need a spin cast reel that is rated for 4 to 6lb test line. It is very important to have a balanced rig. If you have purchased a bamboo pole, it will have the needed rigging already attached for you.

#2: Crappie Baits: There are two ways to go here. You either fish with live bait, or artificial baits, or both. Most anglers use both. If you are new to crappie fishing it may be better to start out with live bait. You will have better success catching fish. You don't want to get frustrated early and not give the sport a chance. If you get hooked on the sport you can progress to artificial baits. Over time you will catch more fish and be more consistent by learning how to use artificial baits, but in the beginning it can get a bit confusing at times.

Crappie fishing tips: If you are fishing stained low visibility water select a chartreuse color plastic tail attached to a 1/32oz to 1/8oz jig with a 8 to 12 inch trailer hook attached to the jig's hook. Use a number 6 to 8 hook. Put two spit shot about 18 inches above the hook. This allows the minnow to move freely, while being held stationary. Use a live crappie minnow by hooking them right behind the eyes in the back of the head. be careful not to go to deep or you will kill the minnow.

#3: When you are fishing in rivers, lakes or streams that have moving water you will need to switch between live and artificial baits depending on the crappie's mood. The crappie is a cold blooded and their body temperature is controlled by the water temperature. When there is moving water, the water temp will vary and so will the activity of this fish. Find good hiding places where crappie my be preparing to ambush lazy bait fish... and put it right in from of there nose.

If they are sluggish, it is because they are uncomfortable.Think of it this way if it was 90 degrees outside and you did not have any air conditioning you would be uncomfortable too. When this fish is uncomfortable they just don't feel like doing anything unless its put right at their noses.

#4: Look for a ripple like effect across the top of shallow water, this is called a "crappie bubble" and it means there are a lot of fish in the area on their beds laying eggs.

#5: Scent you baits using a scenting spray or dip. They have exceptional smell and it is a proven fact that scenting your crappie baits will increase your catch. You can purchase commercial scents at any tackle shop or on line at Bass Pro Shop.
